无尾和有尾螺纹护套是螺旋线圈式的紧固装置，提供永久且耐磨的螺纹，其强度超过大多数基材。这些螺纹护套由冷轧 304 不锈钢丝（符合 AS7245 标准）制成，经过加工硬化，抗拉强度超过 200,000 psi，硬度为 Rc 43-50。其表面极为光滑（粗糙度为 32 微英寸），几乎消除了因摩擦导致的螺纹磨损。
无尾和有尾螺纹护套提供统一粗螺纹（UNC）、统一细螺纹（UNF）和公制螺纹尺寸。螺纹护套可使用 304 不锈钢、Nitronic 60®、Nimonic 90®、磷青铜等多种材料制造。
当安装到 STI 螺纹孔中（统一螺纹符合 NASM33537 标准，公制螺纹符合 MA1567 标准）时，螺纹护套能够提供符合 FED-STD-H28 要求的成品螺纹。装配后的螺纹护套还可以适配 UNJ（符合 MIL-S-7742 和 AS8879 标准）外螺纹紧固件。
无尾螺纹护套在形状、适配性和功能上与传统的有尾螺纹护套完全相同，仅在安装和拆卸方法上有所不同。它们具有完全相同的采购规范（统一尺寸为 NASM8846，公制尺寸为 MA1565）。
干膜润滑剂和镉镀层在 NAS1130、NASM122076、NASM124651、NASM21209、NA0276、MA3280、MA2181、MA3330 和 MA3331 中被提及。任何其他涂层或镀层都将偏离这些规范。
所有未经镀层的锁定无尾和有尾螺纹护套均按照 NAS1130、NA0276 和 NASM21209 标准染成红色以便于识别。这种红色染料是标准的印刷油墨，可以用清洁剂去除。
